Colored Spoons Tutorial

I found these amazing spoons over at Ladies and Gentlemen. But what if I don't want serving pieces, I want a full set of flatware instead? That is where the magic of spray paint comes in. Here's my version and how I did it.

What you'll need:
1. Flatware of your choice
2. spray paint metal primer
3. spray paint
4. painter's tape
5. sandwich bag

1. Wrap neck of utensil with painter's tape, being careful to make a straight horizontal line; also make sure you press the tape into any grooves to prevent bleeding or dripping.
 2. Wrap the head of the utensil with the sandwich bag and secure with more painter's tape.
3. In a well ventilated area, hold utensil by the head and lightly spray the utensil on all sides with the metal primer. Repeat. (As tempting as it is, don't spray one heavy coat of primer. It will create drips and also fill in the delicate carvings in the metal.)
 4. Repeat step 3 with spray paint color of your choosing. Allow to dry and remove tape and bag.
5. Stand back and admire.

Note: Should you decide to vary from this design, you probably shouldn't ever spray paint the part of the utensil the food sits on. I doubt spray paints are "food safe".

EDITS: Standard spray paints are not food safe. I used to have a link to some food-safe spray paint, but apparently the company doesn't carry it anymore. Anyone know where you can get some?
I've been reading about powder coating and it sounds like that might be the best option for heavy use.

Also, I've had questions about how these have held up. I haven't used them enough to give a fair answer, but I will say they've made it just fine through 4 or 5 runs in the dishwasher. Thanks for all your interest!

Found your blog by way of One Pretty Thing. I've never seen this before - I love it!!! I have to go do this right this minute! (ok, maybe tomorrow). Also, you and the baby peacocks costumes are so fabulous!!! I'll definitely be back for more visits!

very cool idea - any idea how well these will hold up after washing?

Christy said...

I ran them through the dishwasher once (because I was curious), and they did just fine. But I don't know how they would do over time with repeated washings...

YAY!!!!! I found the same thing over at Ladies and Gentlemen this morning, and through the power of Google, found a kind and brave soul who'd tried it and shared. Thank you so much!
Any updates on how they've held up over time?

These are gorgeous!

Spray paints are NOT food safe . . . even on the handle. They can chip and get into your food (especially after washing). It is a really bad idea to eat with these and I would be careful telling people about this. Someone could come back to you and you could get blamed for them getting sick. I know that the people over at Ladies and Gentlemen do use an FDA food safe powder coat (very very different from spray paint) and you can eat with theirs. So just a warning to anyone that wants to do this . . . do not eat with spray painted silverware.

Love these!!! Have you washed them? Curious if they're food safe.

gorgeous! I would love an update on how they have held up. They would be perfect for entertaining on special occasions if they are too fragile for every day use.

i know that this is an older post, but since I saw that some previous commenters are (understandably) concerned about food safety, i thought I'd share this link for food-safe spray paint that came up with a quick google search: http://www.emedco.com/best/food_safe_spray_paint

there are not a ton of colors available but this might put someone's mind at ease that wanted to try this project but was nervous about that aspect.

Totally awesome. I'd love to try this!

I would think that using regular spray paint, and then coating the handle again with a resin spray or other non-water soluble sealant would stop it from chipping off and getting in your food. I have no proof or professional information about this, but it seems safer to me.

I think what they use is Plasti-Dip. http://www.plastidip.com/home_solutions/Plasti_Dip

According to their website when it is dry it is harmless: http://www.plastidip.com/faq.php

Very cool idea - Plasti-Dip sells a kit to mix your own colours too!

Christy said...

Thanks Anonymous! Looks like they have Plasti-dip in a spray too. I'd love to try it. Has anyone else had any experience with Plasti-Dip?

The emedeco site that you are directed to for food safe paint, does not carry any food safe paint. I spoke to one of their agents. I guess plastidip is the way to go.

Hello, any update about the held up over time??? I really want to do that project but for everyday use.... What do you think? thanks laure

Christy said...

Laure- The paint does scrape off a bit as the spoons rub together in the silverware tray. They held up through quite a few washings, but now have some chips in the paint. So this may not be ideal for everyday use, but you could try a different kind of paint as some of the commenters have recommended. Good luck!

How about using Porcelaine 150? http://www.amazon.com/Pebeo-Porcelaine-Cardboard-Assorted-45-Milliliter/dp/B004B8WJ5G/ref=sr_1_4?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1350169200&sr=1-4&keywords=Porcelaine+150
It is food safe, non-toxic, will adhere to metal, and comes in 10 colors! :-) I think I'm going to try it.
