I'm posting this in response to numerous requests for instructions on how to make the
peacock costume I made for Ava last year for Halloween. I know a lot of you want to get a head start on the costume making, so I'm jumping the gun and sharing this in August. I don't have a photo step-by-step, but I will do my best to share with you how I made it so that you can replicate it if you want. Please let me know if my instructions need any clarity.
So first the easy part. The orange tights I got at
Gymboree in October (they were sold as a Halloween item, so you might have better luck finding them then) and the onesie I got from
Old Navy. Much easier than making those things. And useable afterward too. Another great resource for colored tights is
welovecolors.com
.
Next I bought the peacock feathers, large teal feathers, and elastic sequin material at
Hobby Lobby (craft store). The sequin elastic was used for the headband as well as to hold the feather part onto her waist and legs so it stayed up properly. I bought a shiny teal blue polyester type material at
JoAnn's (I think). I was lucky that the onesie matched the fabric color so well.
I'd recommend gluing or sewing some feathers onto the headband—it would have looked better.
I figured it would be easier to explain visually, so I drew up a really simple diagram for the rest. The peacock feathers were really long, so I was able to cut them almost in half and use the bottom part inside of the fabric "petals" as support. Better than wire because it's lighter and less risky for the kiddo. A lot of the costume I assembled with a glue gun, because it was only going to be used once or twice, so I figured it didn't need to be too heavy duty on the durability, but you could sew more if you like. The elastic bands I sewed into loops—I figured glue wouldn't hold those very well.
UPDATE: I've been spending so much time sending out emails with the diagram that I need to charge for it now. I've got it listed in my Etsy shop, but it's only $1.50. When you purchase it there I will email the diagram to you. Here is the {
LINK} to my shop. Thank you!
Good luck and happy Halloweening a few months in advance!

this is the best costume ever!! so cute!!
How many yards of the teal fabric did you need? I'm making this costume for my friend's little girl. SO cute!!
Hmmm, good question. You know, I can't remember for sure, but I think one and a half yards should be plenty. Actually, I think one yard should be enough. It really depends on how wide you make your "petals" and how many you decide to make. Have fun!
This is ADORABLE! I think I'll start looking for the materials this year and make this for my kiddo for next Halloween! Thanks so much for posting!
soooo cute, love it!
Love it! Anyone having any luck finding a cute teal onesie?
This costume is adorable. Not quite sure on the directions. I don't see the "diagram" fabric?? what are the peacock feathers attacked to?
I would love to make this for my little baby this coming Halloween.
So in the diagram, the vertical rectangle is 2 pieces of fabric sewn together with batting stuffed inside. It is really the base for everything. The real feathers (and fabric feathers) are then attached to that. Does that make sense?
How many of each type of feather did you use?
I think I used 6 blue and 8 peacock feathers. If you can do more, it would be even better!
I wish I could download or even print this
I didn't realize the link was having issues. I've redirected the link to another location, so you should at least be able to print the diagram now.
The link to the diagram doesn't work for me - it just shows a red X -what am I doing wrong?
What browser are you using? I tried in Safari and it didn't work, but I normally use Google Chrome and it works fine. If you need I can email it to you, just send me an email directly.
I suspect your teal fabric is "tissue lame" which they do sell at JoAnn Fabrics stores. It's a very light weight polyester fabric which has a metallic shine to it. It is great for costumes.

I think you are very proud about this peacock costume; everybody loved it! Please don’t worry about the instructions that you have provided, you were able to convey it to your audience clearly. I’m hoping that you will share many tutorials like this soon. Kostüme für Kinder are very fun to make isn’t it?
How long did you make the "petals"
Mine were about 13-14 inches long, but depending on the age and size of your child, you may want to adjust that.
my email is wranglermkm2000@gmail.com. There is a costume pagent in my area and i would love to dress my daughter up as a peacock.
